Nationwide search begins for
4th Gawad Haydee Yorac awardee
A call to honor modern day heroes
The
Manila Electric Company (Meralco) today announced that the nationwide
search has begun for the fourth awardee of the Gawad Haydee Yorac for
Outstanding Public Service.
Began in 2006 by Meralco,
in cooperation with the University of the Philippines, the award
recognizes leaders from the private sector, government service and
volunteer organizations whose attributes, personal work ethics and
service to the nation are worth emulating.
Just like
the late Yorac, the awardee must be a role model for public service.
More than an award for personal achievements, it looks for service that
a consistently ethical leader has unselfishly given through organized,
realistic and efficient management of both people and resources. The
leadership must have generated significant results to a wide and
diverse public in the concept of national good and harmony in
diversity.
Like her, the awardee must have
attributes, ethics and life examples that guide his/her daily service
and leadership. In the process, the awardee consistently carries out
his/her commitments and duties, accomplishing deeds that reflect the
inner foundation of integrity, courage, selflessness and conscience.
Yorac
faced difficult situations head on, realistic yet not losing her sense
of humor. For that, she gained the respect and admiration of
adversarial persons.
Her sterling record showed
discipline, hard work, critical thinking and integrated problem
solving. Her attributes, personal work ethics and commitments and her
service to the nation are the inspiration for this award.
ANTONIO P. MELOTO
The
first Gawad Haydee Yorac Awardee was Antonio P. Meloto, founder of
anti-poverty and nation-building charismatic movement Gawad Kalinga
(GK). Through the GK, Meloto was able to inspire other Filipinos to
rise up and work to eradicate poverty through a pioneering movement of
volunteerism.
The GK movement ignites hope in poor
Filipino families by building them homes, setting up model communities
and providing them sustainable means of livelihood. He and the GK
volunteers continue to mobilize volunteers, both Filipinos and
foreigners, based here and abroad to build lives in the Filipino ways
of bayanihan and pagkabayani.
DR. MILWIDA M. GUEVARA
The
second awardee was Dr. Milwida M. Guevara, President and CEO of
Synergeia Foundation, Inc, "a coalition of individuals, institutions
and organizations working together to improve the quality of basic
education." She has worked with government leaders in 250
municipalities for school governance reforms, linking government and
private businesses for education for Filipinos in marginalized
communities.
Like Meloto, she excelled in academics:
grade school and high school valedictorian, college magna cum laude in
education from the Philippine Normal College, three masteral degrees in
public finance, economics and fiscal studies; and a doctoral degree in
public finance, summa cum laude. But what is remembered most is her
unshakeable integrity and dedication as Undersecretary of Finance
during the Ramos administration. She was part of the team that brought
economic stability to the country through four years of budgetary
surplus and structural economic reforms.
DR. CHRISTOPHER AND DR. MA. VICTORIA C. BERNIDO
A
physicist-research-educator couple from Jagna, Bohol, Dr. Christopher
C. Bernido and Dr. Ma. Victoria Carpio-Bernido president and principal,
respectively, of the Research Center for Theoretical Physics in Bohol,
have been named the third Gawad Yorac awardees.
Their
partnership to build a stronger nation through science, research and a
new method of teaching founded on excellence and values won the judges'
approval over nominations received from different parts of the country.
In the early 1990s, the couple who were then
University of the Philippines (UP) physics professors—director and
assistant, respectively, of the UP National Institute of
Physics—uprooted themselves from the UP campus and moved to Jagna,
which is described as a seaside fourth-class municipality and a little
over one hour away from Tagbilaran, Bohol.
There they managed the Central Visayan Institute Foundation, the home of the Dynamic Learning Program.
Comprising
the program are a research center in physics, the Research Center for
Theoretical Physics, the high school department that strengthens the
science focus of its students, and the Education Research Center for
continuing development of the learning program.
The
research center they founded has been hosting physics workshops every
three years, drawing experts from all over the world including no less
than two winners of the Nobel Prize for Physics, Gerard Hooft and Frank
Wilczek.
The innovative, "Learning Physics as a Nation"
is beginning to revolutionize high school education in the country,
with over 30 high schools in different provinces of Regions 1 to 12,
ARMM, CAR, Caraga and NCR already using it.
NOMINATION DEADLINE: JANUARY 15, 2010
The
nomination is open to Filipino citizens residing in the Philippines who
are at least 40 years old at the time of nomination. He/she must have
distinguished himself/herself in serving a wide public in the country,
exhibiting courage and integrity in the face of overwhelming challenges.
The
award shall be conferred annually on March 4, Yorac's birthday. The
winner will receive a trophy by National Artist Napoleon Abueva and a
cash gift of P500,000, net of tax.
